Any challenges faced and how they were managed? | Cleaning at public facilities that are open to the public for extended hours is one of the pressing challenges for the Bellingham Transit Station (BTS) – 205 E. Magnolia, Bellingham and for the Cordata Transit Station (CTS) – 4194 Cordata Parkway, Bellingham. At these facilities, members of the public are present at the outdoor waiting areas from early mornings to late at night. There are also employees working and taking break periods inside the buildings from early mornings to late in the evenings at both of these facilities seven days per week. This leaves only a short window of time when the facilities are unoccupied. This is managed by having the janitorial staff perform much of the work after 11:00 pm at night. For work that the janitorial staff perform while the facilities area open for business, the cleaning staff must be able to navigate the needs of the facility users while providing quality cleaning service.
Another challenge at both of the Stations listed above is the graffiti, messes, and intentionally clogged plumbing that happens in the public restrooms. This problem is managed by having a Day Porter as part of the contracted janitorial services at the Bellingham Station location. At the Cordata Station location sometimes the public restrooms are just locked up during the day if there is an issue that needs to be addressed by the evening janitorial crew.
At both of the Stations listed above there are some access controls in place to help reduce the unwanted behaviors that take place in public restrooms.
